Turn Your Monitor And CoughThe importance of a good virus scan should never be underestimated. Viruses are malicious, loathsome lil’ creatures that feast upon your misery and frustration. Many computer users do not concern themselves with virus scans until they are experiencing problems. Unfortunately, at that point, it is more difficult and sometimes impossible to eradicate the pesky, digital vermin.
The Value Of A CheckupJust like in life, regular checkups from a doctor can save lives. Imagine that you had a mortal illness. The chances of curing that illness if it is caught early are much higher than if it is found after the symptoms become troublesome. The same advice applies to computers. Running regular virus scans can nip a problem in the butt before it gets out of hand.
This Won’t Hurt A BitMost anti-virus programs are quite inexpensive. There are even some free programs (though, generally, not as comprehensive and updated as a paid program) that will give your computer a check-up. Also, in general, virus scans are completed in under thirty minutes (approximately) and most of the time you can work on other things while it is occurring. The manufacturers of anti-virus software make it very user-friendly and very easy-to-use. PC neophytes will rejoice at the ease of clicking “Scan Now,” and knowing their computer is safe. Often times, the paid software will offer customer service to assist you with the installation if necessary.
Not Quite The Bird FluThere is no one time fix to all of the viruses out there. In most cases, the malicious geeks that create a virus give it the “feature” of mutating itself into something else, making it difficult to detect. Most paid anti-virus programs (such as Symantec and Norton) make it their job to track these mutations and update their users’ virus definitions automatically and frequently.
Wash Your HandsA great way to avoid contracting a virus is to be wary of what you open. In general, it is best not to open attachments in emails from people you do not know. Also, downloading illegal or pirated software often leads to a virus. Do not install software you are unsure about, especially if it is not store bought.
Ouch! Why all this concern about virus scans? Well, though every virus acts a little differently than the last, their goals are often similar. Most viruses seek to corrupt your data or endanger the security of your confidential files. At times, a virus can destroy your operating system and render your computer unbootable. At other times, your confidential data could be shared with the world when the virus uploads your private files to a third party. Sometimes, a virus will just make some program unable to be started or make a device (such as a webcam or CD burner) unusable. This is nothing to be scared of it you are running regular virus scans. The cost of investing in a program is minimal compared to the damage cost. Take your PC to the doctor by running regular scans and ensure safety and a long, healthy computer life. |
